FIFA 16 Ultimate Team is a soccer simulator ported to mobile platforms from the original FIFA 16 game for consoles. This version of the game is based on the Ultimate Team mode of the full game, which many players claim to be the best feature of that game. Graphically, this port is spectacular, but the controls are a bit of a letdown and the playability has suffered from previous iterations.
This version is modeled specifically for mobile platforms like Android, and it gives players the ability to build their own ideal soccer team. Just like actual team owners, players can trade, win, and buy players from each other as if they were no more than playing cards. Players can also customize their style of play, equipment, and the relationships between the players on the team.
One of the most amazing things about this game is that it gives players the freedom to build teams from real soccer stars. There are 500 teams and more than 10,000 players to choose from, and they come from all across the globe. The settings are incredibly realistic as well, and they represent real-world stadiums. Like most FIFA titles, the level of realism in this game is where it shines.
Of course, creating a team and managing it is just one small aspect of the game. The true fun starts when teams get matched. This game enjoys much of the in-game playability that made the FIFA franchise so popular to begin with, and the boost in graphics makes the gameplay in this title unbeatable. The engine used to create the graphics for this game is as powerful as the engine used for the Xbox 360 and PS3 versions of the game, which is great for graphical capability but horrible for space on the mobile device. Most players will probably have to make room on their device to enjoy the full capabilities of this game.
There was very little improvement between the last iteration of the game and FIFA 16, so the playability is a bit of a disappointment. In some cases, the argument could be made that the playability has actually taken a step backward since the new system doesn't include a tutorial and there is little in the way of intuitive action. This, of course, is more of an issue with the team management side of the game and not so much the actual gameplay during a match.
Like many mobile games, this version is entirely free but includes in-game purchases that can help players progress faster. Players will receive small batches of the in-game currency as they progress naturally, but progress is slower using that method. The realism and beauty of the game more than make up for the fact that players who won't buy any of the in-game purchases must spend more time playing to reach those higher levels.
